Before and After – The Three Stooges

Since there isn’t a new movie out for me to watch to review that I usually do, I decided to change things up for a bit instead. I decided to watch The Three Stooges. Why? For a number of reasons. For starters, I am a huge fan of The Three Stooges! I loved it since I was a kid, sitting along side with my grandpa enjoying this show, which was one of the best memories that I had with him. If The Three Stooges has proven anything to us all about modern day entertainment it has to be it’s humor. Most people may not like older films or TV shows, because they might not understand it for various reasons. But if you ask me what the real reason for not liking anything old is that most audiences nowadays are too accustom to the newer form of entertainment. I can relate to that, since there’s a lot of older things that I don’t care for, but there are also a lot of old stuff that I do like, especially for things made around the time when The Three Stooges came out. As a matter of fact, one of my earliest memories of watching Disney films was both Snow White and the Seven Dwarves and Pinocchio, which are both the first animated movies ever made! Entertainment like these are kind of making me grow and realize that I was always born to enjoy older classics.

Another reason for why I wanted to watch this movie is because of how polarizing this movie turned out to be, both before and after (hehe!) it’s release. The one issue that most people might have had was the Farrelly brothers as the directors. This might have been off-putting for some, since they both don’t have that great of a track record of good comedies, to my opinion at least. Out of all these movies and TV shows that they have both directed,

I only seen one that I liked from them.

But for me, I actually liked what I saw from the trailer. All, but the fact that they had The Real Jersey Shore in the trailer.

I’m so glad that the 2000s is dead.

But despite the negatives that I have seen, I still wanted to see this movie. It may not have looked like it was going to be perfect, but I wanted to find out if I would like it or not. Some who hated it, really hated it! But those who liked it, really liked it and were surprised as to how funny it turned out to be.

Hopefully, I will like it.

I liked it, despite it’s issues. I will get to that later, but I would like to share what made this movie worked for me. For starters, I don’t know who these people that they picked for the Larry, Curly, and Moe, but man do they make it all work! These have got to be the best replacements for the Three Stooges that I will never see being done by anyone better! The way how they perform their physical stunts, the use of dummies, the edits to speed up most of the scenes, just everything about it is as authentic as you can get to the original, despite it not being in black and white. The one thing that caught me off guard was Larry David as one of the nuns, which was hilarious to me!

The story of this movie is split into three parts, like watching the actual TV show itself as three shorts (which has it’s own issues, but we’ll get to that). You wanna know what this movie is about? Have you ever played the NES game before? Well, then that means you know what the movie is about. No kidding. But for those of you who have never played the game, or watched AVGN Ep. 117, here’s the story. The Orphanage The Three Stooges were raised in is in debt. So the Three Stooges are off to raise money to save the orphanage. That’s the whole story in a nutshell that was done better than the NES game. Oh, and wouldn’t you know it, it was made by Activision too.

The humor style in this movie is great, but I do have some issues with it. This movie is split into 3 parts, and these three parts are all 30 minutes long. The original shorts were a third of that. The issue here might be glaringly obvious for some of you who just read this, but for those of you who don’t get it, it’s that the humor does tend to wear off gradually. Of course, the original never had in mind to go over the runtime per short that they made, but you can tell that their shorts were never meant to go over what they gave us. Even the audiences back in the 1930s would get sick of it if a short back then were as long as 30 minutes. As for the rest of the characters, I really didn’t care for them. There was some involvement with a woman who was trying to get The Three Stooges to kill her husband so she can keep his money or something. I don’t know, and I don’t really care. All I wanted to do was see the Three Stooges just do Three Stooges stuff! That’s it! I mean, come on. Did we ever gave a crap about the story in each and every short we ever watched? Because I sure didn’t, and only watched those shorts for the three to beat each other up! …..like what I did with the movie. Well, they got me there!

Outside of that, I don’t have a lot to complain about, outside of the story, and Jersey Shore’s presence that does prove that nobody gives a damn about anymore. It was worth watching and figuring out my opinion. I enjoyed it for the most part as just okay. I might watch it again, but I’m not in a hurry to do so. Give it a chance. It won’t hurt to see if you like it or not.
